ALBUM REVIEW: V/A Universal Vibes Pres. 'This Is What The Universe Sounds Like Pt 1' out now on Universal Vibes

Universal Vibes was set up as an internet radio station in 2002 by Paddy Freeform and has gained a sizeable underground rep since it's launch.

That being said I wasn't exactly brimming with enthusiasm as I sat down and dropped this in the CD drive and braced myself for another bland compilation mix.

Thankfully this was not the case. The mix is sparky, upbeat and reminiscent of a time in the club scene back at the turn of the millennia when this music was everywhere in clubland.

This is mixed extremely well by Freeform and the programming is spot on, building nicely with a blend of west coast house, prog House, mellow techno vibes and just a smidgeon of deep house thrown into the pot for good measure. If you're a connoisseur and haven't already heard of the label then this is a swell introduction.

ALBUM REVIEW: V/A 'Fabric 47: Jay Haze' out now on Fabric Records

The man behind TuningSpork works his magic for Fabric.

If you like to get deep then look no further than the latest in a long line of outstanding compilations from Fabric. It's not easy to make a compilation mix interesting when there are so many of them flying around out there but Haze masterfully mixes tune into tune so that by then end you're left wondering what happened to the time.

I mean before I even knew it we had flow from the opener by Haze called 'Awakening' through to the aptly named and extremely dubby house track 'Trapped In Dub' by Alex Celler.

Things get a little tougher from here whilst the bpm remains healthily under 130. This is pure dancefloor material but I get the feeling that this was intended to sound more like a warm up to a peak time set than a full blown lets get everyone's hands in the air crowd pleaser. If this the case then the execution is delightful. The slow build-up reminds me of days gone by listening to the resident DJ's in a well know UK club gradually lifting the tempo and coaxing people slowly from the edges of the dancefloor into the groove to get the party started.

ALBUM REVIEW: Lucky Elephant 'Star Sign Trampoline' out 3 August on Sunday Best

What a surprise this album turned out to be. If there was ever such a thing as a 'slow burner' then this is it.

The eclecticism of this indie band is quite astounding. They manage to fuse elements of indie, rock, pop, dub, reggae and numerous other music styles into one big magical melting pot and the result is a simmering, shimmering, sun soaked summer groove that I was not expecting after listening to the first couple of songs first time around.

It wasn't until the second listen that I really got into this one and by track 5 'Modern Life, Changing People' I was well and truly hooked. If you are looking for an uplifting yet cool soundtrack then make sure you get it.
