During the 80's Kid Creole was the zoot suited tropical gangster, mixing pop, p-funk, big band swing and Latin rhythms for a series of global chart smashes including 'Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy', 'Stool Pidgeon' and 'Endicott'.Before that he masterminded the disco classic 'There But For The Grace Of God' by Machine before becoming the in-house producer for Ze Records in New York.
This CD is an anthology of those times spent in New York through the eyes of one of the biggest producers of the time and provides a wonderful insight into the feeling of the times, musically speaking.
It's also interesting to note just how many of the songs here have been sampled over the last two decades to create a new range of dance hits, from hip hop to house.
The best thing about this is that Kid Creole has impeccable taste in music and a great ear for a great track. There are fifteen of them on here, most of them hard to find and incredibly expensive if you can find them in their original 12" format. Because the CD is unmixed it's a great tool for DJ's and is programmed in such a way as to be acceptable for home listeners too.
4/5
