The man behind the legendary Atari Teenage Riot, Alec Empire is back with a brand new album that will blow you away, or maybe just your hearing. It's one of those Marmite recordings; you are either going to love this or despise it. I actually wasn't sure what to expect when I put the Album on for the first time and it was a shock to the system. I wasn't sure if I liked the raw edgy vocals that sound like they have been recorded through a megaphone, and the tough aggressive beats and guitars, so I left it a day.
The next day I listened again and now that the initial shock had dissipated I could truly appreciate what a wonderful work of art this album is. There are no bad songs. Alec Empire does not talk about the nicest subjects and there is an overall macabre, melancholy and slightly sadistic feel to the album. But the work itself from a musical point of view is extremely exuberant, fresh and original.
He fuses so many genres of music together that they become unrecognisable, but they are there, they have just been brutally hacked, sliced and sown back together in such a way as to be undeniably different.
Anyone who has seen Vince and Noels performance of 'Future Sailor' in the Mighty Boosh will appreciate the opener 'New Man'. The closest contemporary artist that I could compare Alec Empires work here with would be Peaches and ADULT, although I was left with a slight after-taste of the B52's Americana sound after listening to 'ICE'.
If like me you are getting bored with the same old indie twaddle being vomited up for our regurgitation by the majors and want something new and underground then go and get this now, you wont regret it. Or will you?
