ALBUM REVIEW: Laura Marling 'Alas I Can Swim' out 11th February on Virgin Records

This is Laura Marling's -an 18 year old folk songstress' - first album and it is a classic. It's hard to comprehend such an talent in a woman so young but she sounds like she has been around for years with this superbly produced offering.

The level of song writing is top class and her voice disguises her youth with a maturity normally present in much, much older artists.

She is on a par with Laura Viers and Joanna Newsom, the melodical voice of Marling is both transfixing and hypnotic whilst remaining remarkably soothing, energetic and wholesome. Songs like 'Ghosts', 'You're No Good', 'Night Terror' and 'Cross Your Fingers' cut to the bone both musically and in the way that she sings them with such heartfelt poignancy that you could almost believe that she has felt the range of emotions portrayed in the lyrics. If she carries on like this we will be hearing a lot more from her for decades to come but for now just enjoy 'Alas I cannot Swim' and wonder.

5/5
